From an idea to a living network

IOV’s history is not only a sequence of dates. It is a record of relationships built across generations, disciplines and borders.

  1. The beginning

    1979–1983

    A shared idea becomes an international movement

    IOV began its work in Oostrozebeke, Belgium, and was formally incorporated in Austria. Its purpose was clear from the start: to connect the people who keep folk art and living traditions alive.

    1980The first World General Assembly meets in Mödling.
    1983IOV’s institutional history records its first formal UNESCO relationship.

  2. Growing worldwide

    1986–2007

    The network crosses borders and builds new bridges

    Assemblies, conferences and cultural encounters brought members together across Europe, Africa and Asia. Local knowledge became part of a growing international conversation.

  3. International recognition

    2010–2019

    Cultural practice gains a stronger global voice

    Accreditation and consultative relations strengthened IOV’s ability to represent cultural communities in international heritage policy and cooperation.

    2010IOV is accredited to provide advisory services under UNESCO’s 2003 Convention.
    2012IOV receives special consultative status with UN ECOSOC.
    2019The tenth World General Assembly convenes in Sharjah.

  4. The story continues

    2020–today

    A living network shaped by the next generation

    Today, IOV connects cultural bearers, researchers, young people and organisations around the world—carrying inherited knowledge into new contexts without losing its roots.

    2023The eleventh World General Assembly returns to Sharjah.
    2026ECOSOC withdraws IOV’s consultative status following outstanding quadrennial reporting.
    TodayThe published regional directory currently lists 53 countries.
    NextNew generations continue to document, practise and share living heritage.

International recognition

A relationship built over decades

The terminology and status of these relationships changed over time. Current UNESCO relationships and historical records are identified separately, including the end of IOV’s ECOSOC status in 2026.

UNESCO relationship recorded

IOV’s institutional history records the former designation ‘Status C’; this is historical terminology, not the current accreditation label.

1998

Operational relations recorded

IOV’s institutional history records a period of Operational Relations with UNESCO.

2010

Accredited under the 2003 Convention

Accredited to provide advisory services to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

2011

Consultative relations recorded

IOV’s institutional history records this relationship using the terminology in use at the time.

2012–26

UN ECOSOC status

Special consultative status was granted in 2012 and withdrawn in 2026 following outstanding quadrennial reporting. IOV does not currently hold ECOSOC consultative status.

2023

Accreditation renewed

UNESCO’s public register records renewal in 2023 and the next report in 2027.

Then, now, next

History lives through the people who carry it forward.

The dates belong to the archive. The traditions, knowledge and relationships they represent remain alive today.
