Cultural rights & editorial care

Respect continues after a record is published.

This page explains the public website's editorial approach to consent, cultural context, source information, attribution and correction. It does not replace IOV's formal Code of Ethics or other governance documents.

Website publication practice

Five checks for public cultural records

These checks are used to judge whether a record is specific enough, responsibly sourced and open to correction.

  • People and consent

A person, group or community should understand how their name, image and cultural knowledge will be presented. Publication is not a substitute for permission.

  • Context before display

A photograph or object needs a specific practice, place and social setting. Cultural material should not be used as interchangeable decoration.

  • Source and attribution

Records should identify the source of text and media, preserve creator credits and state known reuse conditions or restrictions.

  • Careful terminology

Names, diacritics, community terms and translations should be checked. Uncertainty should be stated instead of resolved through guesswork.

  • Correction and removal

A creator, rights holder or community representative can ask IOV World to review wording, attribution, access or continued publication.
