Historical note
The first IOV World Congress on Folk Culture met in Gorizia, Italy, in August 1988. A bibliographical record dates the main Congress from 23 to 27 August, while a participant chronology places opening activity on 22 August; the month is therefore used as the stable date here. IOV’s anniversary review records representation from 81 countries.
The official conference archive places folk culture within international peace-building and the approaching turn of the millennium. It also records discussion of the IOV Commission for Science programme in relation to the World Decade for Cultural Development.
