| Straw weaving master |
One of Iryna Sereda’s creative vocations is straw applique. Since 2017, her passion for natural materials has helped Iryna create her artistic work in the techniques of straw applique, straw mosaic, and straw sculpture.
The first works were a series of Easter eggs on ostrich eggs decorated with straw mosaics. The inspiration for their creation was the motifs of Ukrainian embroidery. The straw ornaments applied to the surface of the egg consist of details measuring 2.5 mm and 3 mm.
The material for the craftswoman’s creativity is the usual stalk of rye, wheat and oat straw. Iryna grows and harvests this natural material herself. She loves working with rye straw the most, which has a long, untwisted stalk, which makes it possible to make elements of various sizes for compositions. The transformation of tubular straw into strips for making appliqué details is a rather long and painstaking process. From the resulting straw strips, individual details of the future composition are created by carefully selecting shades.
In her works, Iryna uses the natural color of straw, carefully selecting and combining different shades.
The works of Iryna Sereda are characterized by a clear composition, rhythmic ornamentation, a variety of color combinations from nuanced to contrastingly colorful. In her work, Iryna is guided by folk traditions, depicting folk motifs in her own interpretation. Her works are exquisite compositions characterized by exceptional perfection and harmony.
Iryna Sereda is a regular participant in various thematic and personal art exhibitions, a participant in many All-Ukrainian practical conferences and scientific and practical seminars, a regular participant in the International Congress for the Development of Ukrainian Ethnodesign.
Iryna Sereda’s original works have repeatedly won prizes at various International and All-Ukrainian competitions of decorative and applied arts.
Iryna Sereda believes that the meaning of teaching and creative activity is to preserve rich folk traditions and fill them with new modern content. She constantly works to improve the learning process, passes on her love for folk art to students, teaches them to see the deep beauty of Ukrainian folk art, and to master and modernize artistic techniques.
