History of Guma’ I Mañe’lu (“The House of Brothers and Sisters”)
Guma’ I Mañe’lu was founded in 2017 by Luke Tedtaotao, who continues to serve as Director and Lead Instructor.
From its first rehearsal, the group embraced a clear mission: to promote the CHamoru language and culture through traditional performing arts—dance and chant—while instilling cultural pride, awareness, and purpose throughout the island community.
Growth and Milestones
In less than a decade, Guma’ I Mañe’lu has grown from a small ensemble into a vibrant family of more than 60 active members. Their artistry and dedication have carried the group across oceans, representing Guam and the CHamoru people on prestigious international stages.
● Europe: Swiat Pod Kyczera (Poland), Hello! Schoten (Belgium), Festival Cultures du Monde Chambéry (France), and Les Nuits des Montseveroux (France).
● Pacific Region: Festival of Pacific Arts (American Samoa, Guam, and Hawai‘i).
● Asia: Itogon Cultural Exchange (Philippines).
At home, the group has earned top honors at the Bailan Taotao Tano’ CHamoru Dance Competition—taking First Place in 2018, 2019, and 2025—and received recognition at the Guam Island Music Awards for Best Original Song, “Konne Yu’.”
Today
Guma’ I Mañe’lu continues to perform regularly at village festivals and community celebrations across Guam, sharing the rich heritage of the CHamoru people with audiences of all ages. Guided by its founding vision, the group remains a “house of brothers and sisters,” united in the spirit of language, dance, chant, and island pride.
