On January 7, 2025, in the splendid city of Messina, at the Palazzo della Cultura “Antonello Da Messina”, the prestigious COLAPESCE 2024 award was presented to the world president of IOV World, International Organization of Folk Art, Ali Abdullah Khalifa.
This award, desired and directed by Dr. Lillo Alessandro, is organized by the association CENTRO STUDI TRADIZIONI POPOLARI CANTERINI PELORITANI in collaboration with the University of Messina, Clinica Villa Salus, Fondazione Bonino Pulejo with the patronage of the Municipality of Messina Department of Culture.
The award celebrates the legend of Colapesce, a mythological character from Messina who sacrificed his life to support one of the pillars of Sicily threatened by collapse.
Following Colapesce’s example, many men of value continue to work for the good of society and for this reason the International Award “Colapesce” wants to recognize and honor those who have distinguished themselves in various fields, representing the pillars of contemporary civilization.
Present at the ceremony were the delegation of the Italian section of the International Organization of Folk Art, IOV ITALIA led by the president Fabrizio Cattaneo, the vice president Marcello Perrone, the Secretary General Fabrizio Nicola and the national councilors Andrea Addolorato and Giuseppe Restivo.
At the end of the ceremony we interviewed the IOV WORLD President Prof. Ali Abdullah Khalifa
Mr. Ali Abdullah Khalifa, first of all congratulations on this important recognition. What does it mean to you to receive the COLAPESCE 2024 award?
Thank you very much! It is a great honor to receive this award. For me it represents not only a personal recognition, but also a tribute to the work of the entire IOV World community.
We are deeply committed to preserving and promoting cultural traditions around the world, and this award encourages us to continue on this path.
What have been the most significant moments in your journey with IOV World?
There have been many important moments, but I think one of the most significant has been seeing the growing participation of the younger generations in our initiatives. It is essential to involve young people in the preservation of cultural traditions, because they are the future. Furthermore, the international recognition of our work is always a source of great satisfaction.
What are the future plans for IOV World?
We have several projects in the pipeline, including new collaborations with cultural institutions and educational programs for schools. We also want to expand our network of cultural ambassadors in new countries, to continue spreading our message of respect and appreciation of traditions.
One last question: what do you hope to see achieved in the coming years thanks to the work of IOV World?
I hope to see a world in which cultural traditions are not only preserved, but also celebrated and integrated into people’s daily lives. Cultural diversity is an invaluable wealth and our goal is to ensure that it is recognized and valued as such.
During this interview, Ali Abdullah Khalifa shared with us his deep passion for the preservation of cultural traditions. Through his work with IOV World, he continues to inspire and promote the importance of intangible heritage, ensuring that these traditions live and thrive for future generations.
His words remind us that culture is not just a part of our past, but a vital guide to our future.
During the days in Messina, in addition to the tourist visits in the area and the extraordinary award ceremony, the meeting of the world board of directors of IOV World was held.
In addition to President Ali Abdullah Khalifa, the Vice President Guenther Lippittiz, the Treasurer Clara Hamoen, the President of the world committee of IOV WORLD festivals, Geert Neijiof, the Financial Director Henk Hujser and the Secretary Jarmila Mrustikova participated.
Meeting coordinated by the Secretary General Fabrizio Cattaneo.
The world organization is already working on an intense program in 2025.
It will start with the European Meeting scheduled in Montenegro, dedicated to the programming of exchanges and invitations for international folklore festivals, and then continue with the scientific conference in October in Poland.
An important point of discussion of the meeting was the consolidated collaboration between IOV WORLD and the Italian Federation of Popular Traditions (FITP). This partnership has proven to be fundamental for the success of cultural and folklore activities at a global level, facilitating cultural exchanges and promoting the diversity of popular traditions and confirms itself once again as the backbone of folklore and heritage culture in the world.
