The Enschede Spöllers en Daansers “de Krekkel” is a folkloric dance and costume group from the east of the Netherlands. The region, called Twente, borders Germany with its Low Saxon language. De Krekkel is a lively group that has traditionally kept the culture of their neighborhood alive with song, dance, music, and, of course, costumes.
The group was founded in 1952 and has nearly 30 active members today. During the many performances, original costumes from the late 19th century are worn. The music is played on the accordion.
The dances performed are all original and originate in the eastern Netherlands or Lower Saxony/Westphalia. During a performance, the program is presented with explanations regarding the dances, costumes, and customs. The presentation can also be given in German or English.
De Krekkel has many performances annually in the Netherlands and in the border region of Germany. Every year there is also an exchange with a group somewhere in Europe. Culture is exchanged with the others, and sometimes friendships develop. In recent years, De Krekkel has participated in many festivals, including those in Italy, Portugal, Hungary, Germany, and Sweden. Since its founding more than 70 years ago, De Krekkel has showcased its dances and costumes in many European countries.
Every year at the end of August, De Krekkel organizes a small but cozy festival. The festival has been a tradition for decades. Several groups from the Netherlands and abroad are always invited to this festival.
